NY Times Review of NY Youth Symphony at Carnegie Hall

Very honored to have been a part of the New York Youth Symphony’s spring concert at Carnegie Hall last month! The concert was also praised by David Allen of the New York Times, who wrote:

“‘Bold and fearless.’ That’s the instruction to the musicians that marks the first page of Molly Joyce’s ‘Fresh’ (2014), which had its world premiere as part of the New York Youth Symphony’s spring concert at Carnegie Hall. And it could stand as a description of the orchestra’s playing throughout Sunday’s program, especially in a properly exciting performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

Ms. Joyce’s ‘Fresh,’ commissioned as part of the Youth Symphony’s valuable First Music Program for young composers, made an impression too.

About nine minutes long, it opens with a snare drumroll that gives way to a pulsating dance rhythm at disco tempo. That rhythm slowly and stealthily infects the orchestra, thumping away in high strings at the end.

‘Fresh’ teems and boils, its textures grimy in the low strings and brass at one moment, glinting the next.”

NY Youth Symphony at Carnegie Hall / VisionIntoArt’s FERUS Festival

Thrilled to be back in New York City for two special performances happening over the next couple weeks!

The first is with the New York Youth Symphony conducted by Joshua Gersen, premiering my new piece Fresh, alongside Rossini’s La Gazza Ladra Overture and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (!).

I’m also very excited to be presenting a new collaborative work, YousaidShesaidHesaid, as part of VisionIntoArt’s FERUS Festival at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn. Created in collaboration with playwright Christopher Oscar Peña, director Austin Regan, and fortepianist Patrick Jones, Yousaid juxtaposes modern perspectives with Schubert’s masterpiece song cycle Die Schöne Müllerin. The new work traces the same timeline as Schubert’s work, but from the experience of the female character in the story, who until now has historically had no voice. This presentation will feature soprano Lucy Dhegrae along with fortepianist Patrick Jones, and will also incorporate electro-acoustic elements.

The Wire Mention

Super honored to have been mentioned in the April 2015 edition of The Wire by Chris Woolfrey, in an article on the music scene in The Hague! Woolfrey wrote: “In Lean Back and Release, Molly Joyce combined live acoustic violin with distorted violin loops to superb effect.
